Crafter’s Guide To Glue And Adhesives

When you step into the adhesive aisle at your local hobby, craft or department store, you will be amazed at the vast selection of glues that are available for your perusal! The best advice for using glues is to always consult the manufacturer's instructions. The next best thing is to gain some insight from an experienced crafter.

Someone who is familiar with the projects you have in mind will be able to answer the questions that you don't even know you should ask! Many glues are toxic, and some have an unpleasant odor. A well ventilated area is best when using glues that are not water soluble.

There are numerous brands of glues that all work equally well, with generic brands typically being decidedly less expensive. Experimenting with a variety of glues will help you determine your personal preferences. A plethora of glues are available for paper, wood, glass, wax, metal, jewelry and foam.

Specialty glues often require specific applications to activate their bonding properties. For instance, Gorilla Glue (r) requires that the two surfaces you are bonding to be wet when you join them. Care is required to wipe off any excess glue, as it dries to a golden color that will be visible on your project. However, it can also be sanded off, or painted to match your craft. Visit their website at http://www.gorillaglue.com to learn more of the specific details about this product.

Fabric glues allow you to glue projects temporarily or create a permanent bond. For instance, if you are creating a lesson plan that will be presented in stages; you would select a temporary glue that would allow for the upcoming changes to your presentation. If you are embellishing a garment with rhinestones, sequins or fabric appliques; you would select a permanent fabric glue.

The internet abounds with crafting resources, and can provide you with the information you need to become an officianado of adhesives!
